Bouquet "Dark Muse"

Built from one variety alone, this black calla lily bouquet holds no other flower and no foliage to soften the line. Every stem carries the same closed curve, the same deep, matte tone — a flower with almost no scent, made for the eye rather than the nose. Volume is made to order — from 20 to 100 stems, from a single quiet presence to a dense mass. Louise Nevelson spent fifty years painting matte black over stacks of found wood — mouldings, dowels, banister spindles, chair parts — until each object lost its history and became one thing. Her "Sky Cathedral" (1958) is at MoMA. She said black wasn't a negation of colour but an acceptance: it held every colour inside. This bouquet is the same commitment brought into three dimensions. One variety, one repeated form, one non-colour that contains the rest. Not for a birthday card. For the person who has already received every bouquet and put none of them where they can be seen — for the eye that no longer needs colour to reassure it, for someone who lives inside a considered interior, not a decorated one. Calla is roughly 95% water and doesn't need much to draw from — an inch in the vase is enough. Re-cut the stem straight underwater every two days — the calla stem is soft and hollow, and an angled cut would crush it. Change the water each time. Kept away from direct sun and drafts, it holds for seven to ten days.
