Bouquet "Flame of Desire"

This bouquet is built on a single variety of red rose — an orange centre opening to cherry-red petals that darken toward a muted black at the edge. No other flower, no foliage — the variety alone, on long straight stems. In October 1998, at London Fashion Week, Alexander McQueen showed his collection "Joan". The show closed with a lone model at the centre of a ring of flames, in a red bugle-bead dress and a red mask — the dress echoing flayed skin, the bugle-bead skirt suggesting dripping blood. The palette across the collection — blood red, black, silver — belonged to warfare and execution as much as to fashion. This bouquet doesn't quote the costume; it quotes the red.
