This bouquet is built on a single caramel chrysanthemum variety — warm ochre at the core, pale amber at the tips. Each head arrives already open — a tight spiral of packed petals shaped into a small compact crown. Chrysanthemum is a flower that gives its form all at once and holds it. Japan calls this flower kiku, and gave it to the emperor. The Chrysanthemum Throne is a real institution — it still carries that name — and the first court chrysanthemum show was held in Kyoto in the year 910, an imperial custom imported from Tang China during the Heian period.
